Box blades are some of the most commonly-used tractor attachments on the market. Thousands of farmers across the country own a box blade attachment. If you’re interested in learning more about box blades and how they can be used, this guide from 405-Tractor has the details.

What is a Box Blade?

Box blades are long, rectangular attachments that span a tractor’s width and are used to smooth and contour land. As the name implies, they do this via blades set on the front and back of the implement. Designs vary, but box blades usually feature a series of small blades in the front called scarifier shanks or scarifiers that help break up tough soil. The back blade usually consists of a single smooth edge. Box blades are available in a number of different sizes, with most being towed behind the vehicle, though some box blades are designed to be attached to the front.

Out in the Field

One reason why box blades are so popular is that they are simple yet effective. Box blades are almost always unpowered, which means less time and money spent on maintenance. At most, you might need to adjust a box blade so that the scarifiers are angled forward and have an easier time cutting through the soil. Once the tough earth has been broken up, you can readjust the blades to smooth over the soil.
